If you’re looking to get out of the house and enjoy one of our beautiful winter days, we can certainly recommend heading just 50 minutes south to the Canaveral National Seashore just south of New Smyrna Beach.

This unspoiled preserve offers visitors a chance to hike, boat, fish, canoe, kayak, birdwatch, and learn about history while experiencing 58,000 acres of barrier island, open lagoon, coastal hammock, pine flatwoods, and offshore waters. Primitive camping by permit is also available.

The park is home to the largest oyster mound in the mainland United States which is named Turtle Mound for its shape and is a prehistoric archaeological site and contains oyster shells and refuse from the prehistoric Timucuan people and dates back to 800 and 1400 CE. A boardwalk has been constructed above the mound and offers spectacular views.

Sea turtles nest on the park’s seashore and more than 12,000 nests were created in 2017 with green turtles and loggerhead turtles creating the bulk of the nests, while leatherbacks created just 23 nests.

A remarkable place with much to be discovered, if you enjoy nature you will enjoy our nearby Canaveral National Seashore. Note: definitely take mosquito repellant with deet, even in the winter. For full park info, go here: https://www.nps.gov/cana/index.htm
