Who was Gamble Rogers?

Gamble Rogers performing at the Florida Folk Festival White Springs Florida

Spring is a gorgeous time of the year in Flagler County and many people are eager to get out of doors and enjoy the days as they get longer and our beautiful beaches. Many people head over to Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach to enjoy the sand, surf, nature trails, fishing, and kayaking opportunities in the shady maritime hammock.

Do you know who Gamble Rogers was?

Gamble Rogers was a talented folk musician and a staple and often the headliner at the Florida Folk Festival along the Suwannee River at the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. The son and namesake of two prominent architects (his father and great uncle), Gamble chose to become a musician instead of following along in the family business.

He was often featured on public television and public radio in the 1980’s and was a self-described "modern troubadour.” He influenced many musicians including Jimmy Buffett who dedicated his album Fruitcakes to him writing how he "taught me how to move an audience with dialogue and delivery as much as with music".

Gamble Rogers died a hero in 1991 at the age of 54 when he drowned in an attempt to save the father of a young girl who was in trouble in the rough surf at Flagler Beach. In honor of his heroism, the Florida Legislature renamed the state park Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach. In 1998 he was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

He’s been described by journalists as "An American treasure ... an awesome talent ... one-hundred percent enjoyable ... a rare and guaranteed treat ... worthy of inclusion in the Smithsonian."

In St. Augustine, there is a middle school, Gamble Rogers Middle School, named after him as well as the 23rd Annual Gamble Rogers Music Festival which takes place May 4th-6th at the Colonial Quarter. If you like acoustic Americana music, do not miss this festival.

February RE/MAX National Housing Report

The February RE/MAX National Housing Report shows that buyers may not be waiting for the typical spring selling season to begin! While home sales were down just slightly, year-over-year, houses for sale didn’t spend much time sitting on the market. Are you ready to make a speedy home sale or purchase?

We typically have to wait until March or even April to see the housing market begin to heat up. But with a record number of January home sales, it seems things are kicking into gear early this year. Here are key points from February’s report:

1. Homes are still selling fast

The average Days on Market for homes sold in January 2018 was 60, up three days from the average in December 2017, and down six days from the January 2017 average.

2. Prices continue to rise

The median sales price of a home sold in January was $224,000. That’s nearly 7 percent higher than the median sales price in January 2017.

3. Homes for sale are still in short supply

We still need more homes for sale.  The number of homes for sale in January 2018 was down 4.8% from December 2017, and down 14.8% from January 2017.

4. Slightly fewer transactions occurred

Of the 53 metro areas surveyed in January 2018, the overall average number of home sales decreased 27.4% compared to December 2017 and decreased 2.8% compared to January 2017. But we’re already starting to see the selling season heat up and whether you’re planning to buy or sell or both, now’s the time to contact an agent.

Dig into the details of the February 2017 RE/MAX National Housing Report in the infographic below. For the full report click here.

Congrats On A Job Well Done, Jimmy!

26993518 2019472324730385 5764080716526454541 n

We're so proud of our RE/MAX Flagstaff Broker/Owner Jimmy Millhollin for his efforts as chairman of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce in 2017. Best wishes to incoming chairman John Subers as he takes the lead in 2018.

This was such huge news that the Daytona Beach News Journal covered the story! Images are from Annette Gardinal, Jimmy’s other half and Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Flagstaff.

“ When Jimmy Millhollin took over as chairman of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, he was focused on three things: Communication, collaboration and change.

While progress was made on the first two, the most significant aspect of his tenure was change.

Shortly after being installed as chairman in January 2017, the change manifested itself when then-Chamber president Rebecca DeLorenzo announced her resignation to take a position with the American Red Cross.

“All efforts were placed upon finding a new president and CEO,” Millhollin said. “That’s where all the focus was and that was a good six to seven months.”

The process culminated with the hiring of Jorge Gutiterrez in August.

“A lot of things didn’t get done that I was hoping to get done, but some important aspects did get done,” Millhollin said. “We did have change, that was accomplished.”

MIllhollin also was instrumental in initiating a focus on veteran business owners, calling upon his own experience as a military veteran starting out in the business world. A Veterans Networking group was established offering Flagler County vets information and support in business as well as camaraderie.

“It’s a long-term venture,” he said. “We’ve had several meetings and getting the information available out to veterans was what I was trying to do.”

The foundation Millhollin laid in the search for a new president and CEO, as well as other accomplishments, is something incoming chairman John Subers wants to build upon.

“I can’t start without looking back and applauding Jimmy’s year as chairman and what it meant,” Subers said. “Jimmy was the right guy at the right time. What I am supposed to do in 2018 is continue what Jimmy has started, really what the Chamber has always been about.”

Subers said one of his specific goals is to emphasize the membership value in the Chamber through building relationships and encouraging members and residents to get involved with the business organization.

“My focus will be helping to establish and encourage deeper relationships between the community and the Chamber,” he said.

Subers said one area where that effort will be focused is on small businesses.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that the majority of our business community are smaller organizations, mom-and-pops, and with that comes the challenges of time and resources,” he said. “The value proposition we’re going to hear from Jorge and the staff throughout the year is going to overcome, we hope, those challenges to create value and encourage those folks to get involved.”

Subers said Flagler County is poised for more economic growth in 2018 and the signs are there.

“I think you don’t have to drive very far in any direction in our county to see bricks going up, so there’s growth in the commercial realm of new businesses coming to town,” he said. “I think that sets us up for a very strong economic future and I think the Chamber is right in the middle of it.”

The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce will stage its annual installation banquet Friday at the Hammock Beach Resort. For more information, call 386-437-0106.”

A Pristine Nearby Park!

IMG 0236 resized

If you’re looking to get out of the house and enjoy one of our beautiful winter days, we can certainly recommend heading just 50 minutes south to the Canaveral National Seashore just south of New Smyrna Beach.

This unspoiled preserve offers visitors a chance to hike, boat, fish, canoe, kayak, birdwatch, and learn about history while experiencing 58,000 acres of barrier island, open lagoon, coastal hammock, pine flatwoods, and offshore waters. Primitive camping by permit is also available.

The park is home to the largest oyster mound in the mainland United States which is named Turtle Mound for its shape and is a prehistoric archaeological site and contains oyster shells and refuse from the prehistoric Timucuan people and dates back to 800 and 1400 CE. A boardwalk has been constructed above the mound and offers spectacular views.

Sea turtles nest on the park’s seashore and more than 12,000 nests were created in 2017 with green turtles and loggerhead turtles creating the bulk of the nests, while leatherbacks created just 23 nests.

A remarkable place with much to be discovered, if you enjoy nature you will enjoy our nearby Canaveral National Seashore. Note: definitely take mosquito repellant with deet, even in the winter. For full park info, go here: https://www.nps.gov/cana/index.htm

Jimmy & Annette's New Adventure!

flagler beach

RE/MAX Flagstaff broker owners Jimmy Millhollin and Annette Gardinal are pleased to announce that they have purchased an Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning franchise serving areas from Port Orange to St. Augustine!

They were both looking for a business concept that would complement their real estate business and create an additional revenue stream. After exploring several different options, they both decided that Oxi-Fresh was the ideal fit because it met their goals of 1) running a semi-absentee business, 2) helping to build financial freedom, 3) and making a difference in their community by offering a service that is environmentally friendly.

The cleaning solutions that are used are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and safe in all residential environments, including those with children and pets. Oxi-Fresh is very focused on conservation and the carpet cleaning system uses a minimal amount of water. In fact, typical systems use 20 times more water than the Oxi-Fresh system!

Oxi-Fresh also offers an array of residential and commercial services including upholstery, tile, grout, odor control, wood floors, and more!

If you need carpet cleaning, upholstery, tile, and grout or hardwood floor service, contact Annette or Jimmy at (386) 753-8949 or take a look at our website at https://www.oxifresh.com/locations/fl/palm-coast-carpet-cleaning

September 2017 RE/MAX Housing Report

Available homes for sale across the country increased only slightly in August. This entire summer’s seen strong demand and weak inventory, resulting in listings with short shelf lives and quick sales.

The September RE/MAX National Housing Report shows August sales slightly exceeding July, but slightly trailing August 2016, which remains the best August in the report’s 9-year history. There were 3.9% fewer homes for sale month to month and 13.7% year to year, driving the fastest listing-to-sale time ever seen in August. And they’re selling for 5.4% more than last year.

If you’re thinking about selling, it’s still a strong market. If you’re hunting for homes, you’ll continue to experience very limited inventory and increased competition. But competition makes us sharper and navigating with an agent is the best way forward these days.

June 2017 RE/MAX Housing Report

After an unexpected cooling period in April, the U.S. housing market shot up to post-recession records for the month of May according to the RE/MAX National Housing Report.

More people entered the market this month and as a result homes are flying off the market at a record pace in May. This reduction in 6 days on market represents a growing need for inventory, even as interest rates tick up, they currently do not have the power to cool this hot market.

Appreciation on home values saw another growth period in May versus the month before. So as a potential seller, your home may be more valuable than ever. Understanding home value trends is just one of many dynamics in today’s market that I can help you grasp. Knowledge is power here, whether you are looking to buy, sell, or even just get an update on one of your most valuable assets.

Experience the Coolest of Florida’s Natural Amenities, Florida’s Springs

5282810985 f5bcf6c27d z

Florida summer weather extends into September, which gives folks extra time to enjoy the outdoors. Some of Florida’s prettiest places to enjoy summer and beat the heat are its freshwater springs. While Silver Springs State Park in Ocala often comes to mind first, there are two other springs located within 60 miles of Palm Coast, Salt Springs and Silver Glen Springs.

Salt Springs Recreation Area is part of the Ocala National Forest. The natural spring bubbles up from fissures, or cracks, in the ground, flowing for 5 miles and emptying into Lake George. Visitors can enjoy swimming, canoeing, and motor boating in the crystal-clear waters of Salt Springs.

Also part of the Ocala National Forest, Silver Glen Springs is a gorgeous spot just north of Astor that is both a recreation area and an important archaeological siteThis beautiful spot shows how we can enjoy the outdoors as well as preserve one of Florida’s most valuable natural resources. The spring basin flows gently down into the spring, making it ideal for swimming. Visitors can swim and snorkel in the clear waters that maintain a cool, constant 73*F. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available.

With such a short drive from Flagler County to Ocala, why not take a day trip to one of these recreational areas? For more locations and additional information about Florida’s natural springs, visit Florida’s Springs at http://www.floridasprings.org/
